Apply to BlackBird Books’ 4-Week Residency for Black Womxn Writers

The South Africa-based publishing press Blackbird Books, in collaboration with Casa Lorde and Eunice Ngogodo Own Voices Initiative, is calling for applications to a four-week residency at Casa Lorde, Pretoria, for Black African womxn writers between ages 18 and 40. Residents will be paid R5,000. An imprint of Jacana Media, Blackbird Books has published, among others, Panashe Chigumadzi, Sihle Mthembu, and Bonang Matheba.

Call for Submissions for Ake Review 2019

The Ake Arts and Book Festival, is delighted to announce a call for entries for the 2018 edition of our annual journal, Ake Review. The theme for this year’s festival which is the 6th Edition is:Fantastical Futures, focused on a re-imagined African future. What lessons have been learnt following our understanding of governance, gender and sexuality, literacy and education, health and wellbeing? What events and attitudes will shape the Africa of our dreams? We are interested in submissions that engage these topics.

Submissions:

  1. Poetry – a maximum of three poems
  2. Prose – a maximum of 2000 words
  3. Artwork – a maximum of 2 works in high-res jpeg
  4. A bio of no longer than 70 words

General Guidelines:

  • All entries must be submitted via email to editor@akefestival.org as attachments with ‘AR Submission’ in the subject line.
  • Entries must be original and unpublished
  • Only one submission per person
  • Deadline for entries is Monday 20 July, 2018
  • Successful creatives will receive 2 copies of Ake Review and a token payment which will be communicated directly

Founded in 2016, the Gerald Kraak Award aims to honour works that focus on experiences of gender, social justice and sexuality. The award is given in honour of the late activist Gerald Kraak.

Works which fall within one of the following categories are accepted: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography / photographic essays, journalism / magazine reporting, scholarly articles in academic journals and book chapters / extracts, social media / blog writings and contributions.
